MCD to officially join “Mangroves For the Future” (MFF) in Vietnam

On 22nd May 2013, the workshop initiating 02 projects of program “Mangroves For the Future” (MFF) held by Center for resources and environment study (CRES), MFF and Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD) took place in Hoi An, Quang Nam.

The workshop introduced purposes, expected result and implementation of 02 projects to stakeholders. Medium-sized projects sponsored by MFF include “Improving resilence of communities’ livelihood alternatives and management of adaptation in local Marine Reserves in Vietnam: from local movement to national network” coordinated by MCD in collaboration with local partners and “Sustainable utilization of ecosystem in Cam Thanh water coconut wetland, Hoi An, Quang Nam” coordinated by CRES.

 

 

More than 45 guests attended the forum including local MFF representatives, MFF national committee in Vietnam, representatives of Department of Capture Fishery and Resource protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), related parties from 03 provinces in Middle coast (Quang Nam, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa); representatives of IUCN in Vietnam, NGOs and enterprises. At the workshop, Ms Nguyen Thu Hue – Director of MCD made a commencing speech together with director of CRES – representative of MFF national committee.

 

To share information and consult to related parties, Ms Vu Thi Thao – manager of project MFF introduced “Improving resilience of communities’ livelihood alternatives and management of adaptation in local Marine Reserves in Vietnam: from local movement to national network” implemented by MCD. The project is executed in 24 months (2013 – 2015), in Middle coast of Vietnam include: commune Van Hung (Van Ninh, Khanh Hoa), Nhon Hai (Quy Nhon, Binh Dinh), Tan Hiep (Hoi An, Quang Nam). The main objective of the project is to renovate management of marine conservation network in Vietnam. Then the project aims towards improving the adaptation management for three Marine Reserves monitored by the community via local activities to enforce the national network of Marine Reserves in Vietnam. Four main results that need to be achieved are: the capacity of managers in marine Reserves  monitored by the community and residence within project sites is enhanced; adaptation management plan is completed and shared among the network of marine conservations in Vietnam; the resilient ability against climate change of community livelihood is improve and the project is managed effectively.

 

These 02 projects have been initiated since May 2013 and are expected to make positive contribution to “Mangroves For the Future” (MFF) in terms of adaptation management, sustainable livelihood, resilience of the communities, and sustainable utilization of wetland ecosystem.

 

Project brief:

 

1.Project “Improving resilience of communities’ livelihood alternatives and management of adaptation in local marine Reserves  in Vietnam: from local movement to national network” implemented by MCD aims at consolidating the network of national marine Reserves in Vietnam through activities which improve capacity, adaptation management and likelihood alternatives of coastal community for three local marine Reserves: Ran Trao marine conservations in Khanh Hoa, Nhon Hai in Binh Dinh and Bai Huong in Quang Nam.

 

 

2. Project “Sustainable utilization of ecosystem in Cam Thanh water coconut wetland, Hoi An, Quang Nam” executed by CRES aims at supporting local community in Cam Thanh, Quang Nam to use water coconut wetland sustainably and achieve economic interest by raising awareness and improving capacity for local community meanwhile executing model community-based ecotourism.
