Training Course: Strengthen capacity study of climate change for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Vietnam.
For many years, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Vietnam has made great efforts in implementing the model, propagation, raising awareness of climate change response in Vietnam. The non-governmental organization Vietnam always strive research efforts, improve the knowledge about climate change in order to strengthen capacity and contribute jointly to minimize and adapt to climate change.
Within the framework of the project “Strengthening the skills of scientific research in the field of climate change for non-governmental organizations in Vietnam (VNGOs)” sponsored by APN, the training: “ Strengthen capacity study of climate change for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Vietnam.“, took place in 5 days (from May 7 to September 11, 2014) by the MCD and AMDI jointly organized. The course was intended for participants who are representatives from the member organizations of the Vietnam network non-governmental organizations and Climate Change (VNGO & CC).
The training course was organized for the purpose of enhancing scientific research skills and capacity about climate change, included the transmission of knowledge through the lectures about research on climate change in Vietnam, enhancing interaction between scientists and policy makers, providing scientific input to enhance public knowledge on issues of sustainable development and climate change. At the same time, strengthen the cooperation between non-governmental organizations, which works in the field of climate change in Vietnam (VNGO & CC).
The training content introduced and synthesis of background information, the most updated on climate change. The students were introduced to the Climate Change (CC) and related concepts (distinction between weather and climate, adaptation and mitigation ….). At the same time, students are updated operating history, awareness of global climate change, the policy mechanisms and strategies related to climate change adaptation and sustainable development (low carbon, harmony with nature and recycling of resources, green growth). Besides, the methods of scientific research and the main approaches, the new approaches based on ecosystem, updating information about the script and the evolution trend of global climate change as well as the forecasts, estimates about future climate change and lower scale skill (downscaling) were brought to the students under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Truong Quang Hoc from the University of Economics – VNU in Hanoi, Dr. Nguyen Van Hiep from the Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment (IMHEN) and Dr. Le Anh Tuan – Lecturer in the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources – University of Can Tho.
Throughout the course, instructors imparted the useful content for VNGOs and
gave specific examples in order to build a project for the practitioners.
The course focused in depth on the guidance for practitioners about the methods and tools to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative research on climate change. Integrated assessment methods: correlation and regression. Especially, the course also focus on assessment tools Participatory rural appraisal (PRA), the practical exercises for evaluation and analysis applied in reality, and the combination sharing of MCD and CARE. Next, the lectures shared about the overview introduction about the logical framework to survey climate change, the approaches to application of the logical framework to assess the impact of climate change in Vietnam.
Completion of the training course, practitioners obtained the knowledge about the process of publishing a paper, the research results in scientific research, including basic rules of presentation when publishment the results of research in the local and international. Finally was the summary of training courses with sharing, comments of practitioners about this course. Training course had ended successfully, leaving many profound lessons for both the lectures and practitioners, in order to continue the process of scientific studies (05 case studies) later. The course achieved results through in-depth presentations, sharing case studies of students from MCD, AMDI, SRD, CARE.
