Ocean Talk – Increasing student understanding of solid waste and marine plastic waste management
On December 28, 2019, at Nam Định, Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD) is in collaboration with Mỹ Tân Secondary School to organize the program “Ocean Talk – Increasing student understanding of solid waste and marine plastic waste management”. Attendance includes delegates from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Nam Định, Education and Training Division of Mỹ Lộc district, People’s Committee of Mỹ Tân commune, with more than 600 students and the teachers of Mỹ Tân Secondary School. This program is held in response to the implementation of the National Action Plan for Marine Plastic Waste Management, issued by the Government on December 4, 2019. This activity is part of the marine plastic waste management project implemented by MCD and its partners in Nam Định province, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as well as World University Support of Canada (WUSC).

Mrs. Hồ Thị Yến Thu, Standing Deputy Director of MCD highlights the significance of the event: “this Ocean Talk for enhancing student understanding of solid waste and marine plastic waste management in the connection with the Blue Lighthouse Program (Hải Đăng Xanh) for Volunteer Youth Initiative together aim to foster healthy participation in teenagers and school students to learn about solid and plastic waste, its problems and solutions, and at the same time to promote innovative actions by the school students for reducing marine plastic waste, while protecting the terrestrial and marine environment”
Mrs. Trần Thị Lưu, Principal of Mỹ Tân Secondary School expressed her praise in the event, “The program is very useful in bringing basic and up-to-date knowledge about marine plastic waste and how it causes serious problems for the environment and marine resources, while affecting the lives of the community. This thereby helps the students to have the right thoughts and practical actions which can contribute to solving this problem.”
This activity takes place within the framework of the project “Comparative pilot waterway municipal plastic waste management practices for reducing marine plastic pollution in Nam Dinh province of the Red River Delta World Biosphere Reserve, Vietnam”, funded by USAID, for which MCD is the principal implementer and in coordination with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE) of Nam Dinh and other local partners. The WUSC also joins hands with the supporting initiative “Youth led actions for awareness raising and behavior change on reducing marine plastic waste” to mobilize university students to participate in the event, through MCD’s Blue Lighthouse Program.
