Cat Ba and the model of net house safe vegetable production
In the Xuan Dam Commune, Cat Hai District, Hai Phong Province, MCD supports vegetable farmers to implement the model of net house safe vegetable production, with the core group of nine households applying the model in the area of 1000m2. Previously in Xuan Dam, vegetables was mainly cultivated based on the traditional farming method. However, with the negative impacts of weather due to climate change, this method encountered many difficulties and led to bad harvests. To address these problems, the model of net house safe vegetable production was chosen and implemented as a climate change adaptation initiative.
At present, the construction of net houses for Xuan Dam’s core group has been completed and the households have put the model into operation for the 2018 winter – spring crop. Mr. Bui Van Long, the group leader, said: “The vegetable farmers are very excited to be supported by the project. Plants grew in net houses will be able to avoid heavy rains, storms, bad temperature, droughts and diseases. It helps farmers have a more stable income source, ensures their lives and contributes to better vegetable supply in Cat Ba.”
The model was launched within the framework of the project “Red River Delta Adaption & Youth” (READY) funded by USAID and implemented by MCD in collaboration with stakeholders in 3 provinces including Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, and Hai Phong.
