Case study on initial outputs of sustainable aquaculture pilot model in Phu Long
On 10th Octorber, 2012, at the People’s Committee of Phu Long commune, Cat Hai district, Hai Phong city, MCD in collaboration with Phu Long Commune People’s Committee of 03 communes: Phu Long, Hien Hao and Xuan Dam organised workshop to share initial results of sustainable aquaculture pilot model in Phu Long.
Attending the workshop were representatives from Hai Phong’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, local governmental officers and staffs of the Phu Long commune, Hien Hao, Xuan Dam and numerous representatives of the community members engaged in aquaculture Phu Long.
At the conference, Ms. Bui Thi Kim Phuong – Haiphong’s DARD staff shared initial research findings of sustainable aquaculture pilot model in Phu Long, identify difficulties, which the research team encountered, and involve delegates in discussing the better implementation methods for the future that enhance the community’s capacity to adapt to climate change.
Model of sustainable aquaculture (with transplant type tiger prawns with crab mangrove canopy) with community involvement have been carried since 2011 under MCD’s technical and financial support, so far has achieved initial results. However, because there is no local production facilities like fish seed but to be purchased from other areas or exploit from natural resources which is uncontrolable, unstable and more scarce, natural water environment showed signs of pollution and climate change makes weather more erratic, extreme that lead to make aquaculture more risky and some species of local “special” (bored, brackish water tilapia, shrimp and crab, …) to reduced.
Within the framework of the seminar, Mr. Vu Van Trung – MCD’s Community Development Officer shared technical handbook for transplant prawn farming to share techniques and experiences draw from the model, from that widespread best practices to other communes in Hai Phong city.
