On 26/12/2014 in Hai Phong City, the Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD) cooperated with People’s Committee in Cat Ba district to organize the event  p “Evaluation of results of the climate change adaptations of livelihoods during period 1 in the Red River Delta”. Attending the meeting were MCD representatives, climate change experts, People’s Committee representatives, and the leaders of livelihood projects in Hai Phong, Nam Dinh and Thai Binh.

The activity is part of the project: “Partnership for equitable Resilience to the impacts of climate change of the Coastal communities in delta of Vietnam – PRC Project (MCD 46), which is sponsored by Australian Government with technical support from Oxfam

The meeting aimed to share and evaluate the outcomes of the first period development of livelihoods adapted to climate change. The basic project objective is to estimate the level of individual adaptation to climate change in each province’s subsistence livelihoods.  At the same time, the meeting was also for discussing and sharing lesson learned from experiences and proposing improvements for the ongoing livelihoods in the areas of project.

According to Mrs. Hoang Ngoc Ha, a consultant for the MCD project, the purpose of the  event is to enhance adaptive capacity for 3 coastal provinces that are strongly affected by climate change. Additionally, the event is aimed at finding the optimal solutions to change local community’s perception and behavior in terms of disaster prevention and climate change adaptation Besides, one of the event’s purposes is enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the project in the long term.

After carrying out the process of evaluation of vulnerability toward participated households and setting up livelihood groups in 5 communes in Nam Dinh province, 3 communes in Thai Binh province and 3 communes in Hai Phong province, there are 977 poor households which were selected and supported to implement adaptive livelihood models regarding rice cultivation, mushroom cultivation, Mong Cai sows, fish farming, biological padding for pigs and so on.

In the event, Professor Nguyen Duc Luong, Vice Principal of Thai Nguyen Agriculture and Forestry University, said that the project achieved  substantial results, and that soon the project should be expanded,   developed effectively at the project  areas . However, it cannot denied that he project also has certain difficulties, therefore, It is neccessary for having a flexible and suitable approach for donors, local officials, local community and other stakeholders

On this occasion, the delegates visited  some  climate change adaptive models hich  were  implemented in Cat Ba town, Cat Hai District, Hai Phong City.
